Song: Besame Mucho
Artist: Cesaria Evora Velazquez
Album: Great Expectations Soundtrack

Perhaps I’m biased, because I like the movie and soundtrack, but I can’t seem to find another version of this song I like better.

Song: Love Will Tear Us Apart
Artist: Joy Division
Album: Substance 1977-1980

To be honest, I really don’t know much about musical movements and history [of the last 20-30 years (punk, post-punk, new wave, from Sex Pistols to Elvis Costello, for instance)].  But, I heard a lot of good things about the movie Control, a movie about the lead singer of Joy Division, Ian Curtis, and finally got around to watching it last night.

It was good for a biopic.  I particularly liked how practically the entire film was shot with a wide open aperture.

Incidentally, I first heard about the band Joy Division from an (awesome) old desk partner, Sandy.  The movie totally made his idiosyncracies make a lot more sense.

Lastly, I had no idea that the remaining members of the band Joy Division formed New order!

The other musical mapping service mentioned before that I finally got around to finding.  Except this one has movies, too.

Song: Good Souls
Artist: Starsailor
Album: Love Is Here

I couldn’t find the song I wanted to post, so this was the next best thing.

When I broke up with my ex-boyfriend, I made the promise that I would reconnect with and be a better friend (mainly by keeping in touch and hanging out more often than the “once-every-two-or-three-weeks” it seemed like).

Being as super busy as I have been, I really started to miss my friends and it started to take it’s toll on me emotionally.

I was set that this week I was going to call everyone and try to set aside time to meet up with each of them.  I was finally able to spend sometime on the phone with a few of them last night and today, so I feel much better.

Song: Good Morning Baby
Artist: Dan Wilson and Bic Runga
Album: American Pie Soundtrack

Another repeat artist.

This is one of those songs on my “Life Soundtrack.”

It’s been one of those days weeks (and it’s only Tuesday, I might add).

But it’s getting better.

tuneage:

Nina Simone - “Gimme Some” (Mike Mangini remix)

Even if you’re not jazz fan, you probably know songstress Nina Simone from her song “Feeling Good,” which was featured in the plentiful promos for the 4th season of HBO’s “Six Feet Under.” Her original recording of “Gimme Some” is very much in the same vein, slow and jazzy, but you’d never know it from this remix. Mike Mangini masterminds a total transformation of the music and background vocals to turn it into a modern toe-tapping tune.

Maybe I’ll get around to posting my own song later today.  But, I listened to this song this morning and really, really liked it!

Song: “Life Is Beautiful” Theme
Artist: Nicola Piovani
Album: Life Is Beautiful Original Soundtrack

One of my friends took me to see this movie for my (18th) birthday. I saw it two more times after that in the theater (and I swear I still cried each time). It’s not one of those movies, like Before Sunset, that I can watch “over and over” again. But, I have to say that hands down it is one of, if not my most, favorite movies.

*

I always thought that if I had a “soundtrack” to my own life, this would be one of the tracks.

It’s a little embarrassing to say, but back in the day when I was a young teenage hopeful silly little girl, I used to think about how nice it would be to dance to this song with “him” (whoever “that guy” was to be in my life, because at the time I didn’t have a boyfriend) at sunset at the beach. The rays of the sun turning everything golden as we swayed back and forth, my eyes closed, completely enveloped in “his” embrace.

I know: super cheesy.

Song: Sway
Artist: Bic Runga
Album: Drive / American Pie Soundtrack

Loved the song the first time I heard it in the theater:

And here I go, losing my control
I’m practicing your name so I can say it to your face
It doesn’t seem right, to look you in the eye
Let all the things you mean to me
Come tumbling out my mouth…

She is also just as beautiful as the sound of her voice.

Song: Sunshower
Artist: Chris Cornell
Album: Great Expectations Soundtrack

I quickly went through my entire iPod (27GB!) and found quite a few songs I wanted to post. But to make things a bit easier, I’ve decided this week will be “Soundtrack week.”

I think this movie is what got me hooked on many Ethane Hawke and Gweneth Paltrow movies. I just really like the characters/roles they choose to play.

Song: Mi Buen Amor
Artist: Gloria Estefan
Album: Mi Tierra

Something to combat the previously posted emotionally-draining Spanish song from the other day. (I actually wanted to post “Con Los Anos Que Me Quedan” but the message in this song a bit happier.)

There is something so poetic about the lines “Que tu amor, amor solo el que un dia / En tu pecho, vida mia, me dio la felicidad” that just resonate within.
