In response to my post, my friend Shi told me that she seriously considered not having kids because she told me she didn’t want to bring her children into this kind of world.
While I can understand her concern, I told her, “I guess I view it differently.”
Yes, I think it’s a shitty world we’re living in, and I forsee things getting a bit worse over the next 20 years or so. But, I’d like to think that the values and views I will teach my kids will have a positive effect to changing this world.
Sure, it’s like throwing a pebble in the middle of an ocean—that the ripples of just my stone won’t do much, but imagine the kinds of tsunamis that we can create by teaching our kids, or giving them the… knowledge… ideas… desires… whatever… to change this world!
Even if I narrowed it down to just my child(ren)… I don’t know, maybe I put too much hope on The Butterfly Effect of the Chaos Theory:
A butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil causing a hurricane in North America.
(Or any other variation.)
But, maybe I’m being too optimistic. Or humanistic.
I think there are plenty of other reasons not to have kids, but I won’t let (Bush and all that he’s done to ruin the world) be one of them.
